You can end up with a build where you have a million summons running around keeping you safe, then you can just corpse explosion which does massive aoe damage and clear things quickly. Now Necros on the other hand are super easy to level and can do some monsterous damage with tools that will allow you to get through the game and farm whatever it is you want to farm. The problem though is you run into immune monsters which makes life hard and you are super squishy leading to easy deaths.
Now most people start with a sorc because she has teleport which is a game changer for speed of getting to your farm spots. Honestly with solo self found, I'd probably recommend a Necro for ease. I currently have Sur, 2xGul and Mal in my stash. My first offline character is an assassin (on hold since I'm currently grinding ladder) and all I did was rush myself to hell act 3 and then grind countess and lower kurast for runes. Of course, you can shop a +teleport staff for your weapon switch so that you can move past cluttered zones quicker (maggot lair, arcane sanctuary, etc.) or exit dangerous situations. It's a solid alternative to sorcs who teleport. Also, with burst of speed you can move really fast around the map to progress or simply kite mobs. You don't even need a weapon shopping a +lower resist wand will do the trick and there's also plenty of low-mid level runewords that are great fits for the assassin (Lore, Hustle, Treachery, Ancient's pledge, etc). You can breeze through the game up to act 4 nightmare with only fire traps and then respect to lightning traps to clear the rest of nightmare and move on to hell. I'd say assassin is probably the easiest to climb with.
